WHAT CONCRETE CUTTING ACTUALLY INVOLVES

Concrete Cutting Is Not a Single Task, and Using the Wrong Method Damages What You're Trying to Save

Concrete cutting covers controlled cutting, coring, and sawing operations performed on slabs, walls, curbs, and foundations. The right method depends entirely on what you're cutting, why you're cutting it, and what surrounds the cut zone.

In Suffolk County, most concrete cutting jobs fall into a few common categories — flatwork cutting through driveways, parking areas, sidewalks, and patio slabs; core drilling for utility runs through existing concrete structures; wall sawing for doorway and window openings through poured concrete or block foundations; and expansion joint cutting on new pours to control where slabs crack.

Suffolk County has a wide range of concrete ages and conditions — from mid-century residential pours to recent commercial flatwork — and each one cuts differently. Our crews know how to read a slab and adjust technique based on concrete mix, aggregate size, and reinforcement encountered. Every cutting job starts with a site walkthrough — we locate reinforcing steel, check for post-tension cables on commercial slabs, identify utility locations, and confirm the cut layout with you before a blade touches the surface.

CUT TYPES WE HANDLE

Five Types of Concrete Cutting, When Each One Is the Right Method

SLABS & FLATWORK

Flatwork Cutting

Walk-behind slab saws with diamond blades for straight, clean cuts through driveways, parking areas, sidewalks, and patio slabs. Depth controlled precisely so we cut through the slab without damaging vapor barriers, utility lines, or compacted base material beneath. Used for both selective removal and new control joint cutting.

UTILITY & DRAINAGE

Core Drilling

A core drill pulls a clean cylinder of concrete from a slab or wall — used when running plumbing, conduit, or drainage pipe through an existing concrete structure. In areas like Babylon and West Islip, contractors and homeowners call us for exactly this when adding utilities to existing buildings. Holes range from 2 to 12 inches in diameter. Every cut measured and marked first — no guessing on a core drill.

WALLS & FOUNDATIONS

Wall Sawing

A wall saw runs on a track system mounted to a vertical surface — used when a doorway or window opening needs to be cut through a poured concrete or block foundation wall. Common on older Suffolk County homes and commercial buildings where the owner wants to add access points or modify the structure. The track keeps the blade perfectly plumb — the opening is square and ready for framing.

TIGHT SPACES

Hand Sawing

Tight corners, confined spaces, areas where a walk-behind saw cannot reach. Requires more operator skill because the machine isn't guided by a track or frame. Our crews know how to read a slab and adjust technique based on the concrete mix, aggregate size, and reinforcement encountered — each one of which affects how the material cuts.

NEW POURS

Commercial Loading Area Slabs

When a new slab is poured, control joints must be cut within a specific window — typically 4 to 12 hours after finishing. Miss that window and random cracking follows because the slab has nowhere planned to relieve stress. We cut control joints on new pours across Suffolk County to give the slab a place to crack in a straight, planned line — not across the middle of your driveway at random.

When Your Project Actually Needs a Concrete Saw — and Why Using the Wrong Tool Costs More Than the Job

Not every concrete job needs a saw. But when it does, using the wrong approach causes cracked slabs, uneven edges, and costly repairs.

If you need to remove a specific section of a driveway or parking lot without disturbing the surrounding concrete, a saw cut creates the clean edge that lets you patch or repour just that section. Attempting to break out a section with a jackhammer without cutting first damages surrounding concrete and leaves ragged edges that don't hold a patch.

If you need to run a drain line through an existing concrete floor, a core drill creates a clean penetration that can be sealed properly. Cutting or breaking a random opening compromises the slab at the edges.

If you need to remove settled or cracked concrete in a tight space next to a building or curb line, hand-cutting allows precise removal without damaging the adjacent structure.

We assess every cutting project with a site walkthrough first — confirming what method is needed, where utilities are located, and what needs to be protected before we start.

Wet Cutting, Dust Control, and OSHA Compliance on Every Cutting Job

Concrete cutting produces silica dust — a serious health hazard that OSHA regulates specifically for this type of work. We don't take shortcuts here.

Wet cutting is standard on most flatwork — water keeps the diamond blade cool and controls the silica dust that comes off a concrete cut. On interior jobs or areas where water runoff is a concern, we use vacuum-assisted dry cutting systems that capture dust at the source and keep the work area clean and compliant with OSHA silica exposure standards.

You get a controlled, professional cut regardless of where the work is happening — interior garage, exterior driveway, commercial loading dock, or basement floor.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Concrete Cutting Questions, Straight Answers

  • Flatwork cutting uses a walk-behind saw to make straight cuts through horizontal slabs — for selective removal of damaged sections, expansion joint creation, or utility channel cutting. Core drilling uses a rotary drill to extract a clean cylindrical hole through a slab or wall — for utility penetrations where a round, sealed opening is needed. The right method depends on the application.

  • Yes — that's the specific advantage of using the correct cutting equipment and method. A walk-behind saw with a diamond blade makes a precise, controlled cut at the exact depth needed without transmitting shock or vibration to the surrounding concrete. Attempting to break out a section without cutting first is what damages the surrounding material.

  • Yes — before any core drilling or cutting that could interact with underground utilities, we call 811 to have lines marked. This is a New York State requirement. Gas, electric, water, and communication lines run through most Suffolk County properties, and a core drill into an unmarked utility line is dangerous and expensive.

  • Control joints should be cut within 4 to 12 hours of finishing, according to the American Concrete Institute. Miss that window and the slab will crack at random locations as it cures and contracts rather than along the planned joint lines. We include control joint cutting as a standard part of every new slab pour we complete in Suffolk County.

  • Yes — when the correct dust control method is used. We use vacuum-assisted dry cutting systems for interior work to capture silica dust at the source. This keeps the work area clean and compliant with OSHA silica exposure regulations. We don't use wet cutting indoors where water runoff would be a problem.

  • Yes — wall sawing is the method for this. A track-mounted saw runs along the vertical surface, keeping the blade perfectly plumb so the opening is square and ready for framing. Common on older Suffolk County homes and commercial buildings adding access points or modifying existing structures. We assess the wall construction before cutting — poured concrete and CMU block walls each have different cutting requirements.
