Stone Retaining Walls Do Two Jobs Simultaneously, Hold the Slope and Define the Property's Appearance
The wrong stone choice is one of the most common mistakes property owners make. What you pick affects how long your wall lasts, how much weight it holds, and how it looks. Every season we get calls from Suffolk County homeowners dealing with walls that shifted or crumbled because the stone wasn't right for the job.
Three main stone types drive most of our work on Long Island: natural fieldstone, cut bluestone, and manufactured concrete block stone. Natural fieldstone locks together well for low-to-mid height walls and blends into the landscape naturally. Cut bluestone gives you cleaner lines and tighter joints, handles heavier loads, and works well for taller walls on sloped lots. Manufactured stone block is engineered for consistent sizing and drainage — important on properties with high water table conditions common in low-lying areas of Suffolk County.
Most retaining wall failures on Long Island aren't stone failures — they're drainage failures. Water is the number one enemy of any retaining wall. If water can't move through or around the wall, it builds pressure from behind and pushes. We've repaired dozens of walls in Suffolk County where drainage was never addressed at installation. Every stone wall we build includes gravel backfill, drainage pipe, and weep holes designed for your site's specific conditions.

STONE TYPES WE BUILD WITH
Three Stone Options, What Each One Is Right For on a Long Island Property
Visible Soil Movement After Rain
NATURAL · LOW-TO-MID HEIGHT
Irregular in shape — locks together well for walls under two to three feet and blends into the landscape naturally. Gives a rustic, traditional look that fits established residential neighborhoods and properties with mature landscaping. Cannot be mortared for walls over two feet — requires a proper structural system at greater heights. Locally sourced where possible to keep schedules tight.
Visible Soil Movement After Rain
FORMAL · MID-TO-TALL HEIGHT
Cleaner lines and tighter joints — handles heavier lateral loads and works well for walls in the four-to-six foot range common on sloped Dix Hills and Huntington properties. More formal appearance suited to structured landscaping, commercial entryways, and properties with architectural stonework. Needs equipment to place correctly — we use our own machinery on every job.
Manufactured Stone Block
HIGH DRAINAGE SITES · CONSISTENT APPEARANCE
Engineered for consistent sizing and drainage — the right choice on properties with high water table conditions or where precise coursing and a uniform appearance matters. Performs well in areas throughout Suffolk County where clay-heavy soil holds moisture close to the surface. Available in multiple textures and finishes to match surrounding hardscape.
Signs Your Suffolk County Property Needs a Stone Retaining Wall — or That an Existing One Is Failing
Soil creeping toward your driveway, foundation, or neighbor's property after heavy rain. Dirt shifting, mulch washing into the street, low spots appearing where there weren't any before. In areas like Dix Hills and Commack — where lots often slope toward the street — this kind of erosion moves fast and quietly.
A slope too steep to mow safely. A hillside where nothing holds because the ground keeps shifting. A stone wall that's already there but bowing, tilting, or separating at the joints. These are all the same signal: the grade is working against you and it won't improve on its own.
Cracked pavement near a slope is a warning. When soil erodes underneath asphalt or concrete, the surface loses support and starts to crack or heave. If your driveway or walkway is cracking along a slope line, the soil underneath is moving.
If you're planning to add a pool, patio, or outdoor structure on a sloped yard — address the grade first. Building on an unstable slope without a retaining structure puts your entire investment at risk. Getting the retaining wall right first saves you from expensive repairs later.

BEFORE WE BUILD
What Happens Before the First Stone Is Placed on Your Suffolk County Property
01
Site Walk & Slope Assessment
We walk your property reading the slope, the drainage patterns, and the soil. Sandy, well-draining soil near the South Shore behaves very differently than the heavier, clay-mixed soils inland toward Hauppauge or Commack. What drains fast in one neighborhood holds water and builds pressure in another.
02
Load Calculation & Material Selection
Wall height, what sits above the wall, and site soil conditions all determine the right stone and structural system. We recommend material based on what will actually perform — not just what looks good in a photo.
03
Drainage Design
Drainage planning happens before the first stone goes in — not after. French drain, gravel backfill, weep holes, or some combination. This is the step most failed walls skipped at original installation.
04
Permits & Utility Marking
811 called before any excavation. Permit requirements confirmed for your specific Suffolk County municipality. When our crew arrives, every variable is accounted for.

We are a car dealership, it is a huge challenge to navigate a paving project with all the vehicles on site. Not for these guys. ABSOLUTELY A++. COMMON QUESTIONS
Stone Retaining Wall Questions, Straight Answers
Most stone retaining walls take two to four days to complete depending on length and height. A shorter decorative wall goes faster. A four-to-six-foot wall on a steep lot in Dix Hills takes longer because we prep the base, set drainage pipe, and pack gravel backfill before the first stone goes in. We work with our own crew and equipment — no waiting on subcontractors.
Many Suffolk County towns require a permit for retaining walls over a certain height — often two feet or more. The rules vary by town, so a wall in Islip may have different requirements than one in Brookhaven. We pull the right permits before work starts.
Most retaining walls fail because of poor drainage, not bad stone. Suffolk County's clay-heavy soil holds water and expands during freeze-thaw cycles. That pressure pushes against the wall from behind. Without gravel backfill and drainage pipe, even a well-built wall will bow or lean over time.
Yes — a properly built retaining wall redirects water and soil pressure away from your foundation. When wet soil pushes against a basement wall or slab edge, you get hydrostatic pressure that cracks concrete over time. A stone wall with gravel backfill and drainage pipe behind it stops that pressure before it reaches your home.
Proper drainage. Without adequate drainage behind the wall, hydrostatic pressure builds up and causes the wall to crack, lean, or collapse over time. We install gravel backfill and drainage pipe on every stone retaining wall project — it's not optional.
You should fix the grade before you build anything on a slope. Adding a patio or pool on unstable ground puts your whole investment at risk. The hardscape can shift, crack, or settle as the soil moves underneath. Getting the retaining wall right first saves from expensive repairs later.
